Due to an extraordinary number of scummy folks with a history of spam or comment abuse registering on wikipython there is now a completely different process. A registrant will be given an initial role of “subscriber”, a background check for spam and site abuse will be done and if that clears they will be sent a personal email requiring a response to two questions and their (no-kidding) real name. If they respond they will be upgraded to a “contributor” role which will allow them to post comments. If they don’t they will be deleted.
The email sent to them will be something like this:
Hi (email goes here)
Thanks for letting me know you visited www.wikipython.com by registering on the site.
Please be assured your email address is absolutely confidential and will never be sold, rented, given away or used inappropriately. I sincerely hope you found something useful on the site, and would be appreciative of comments that would help to make the site better.
I would like to ask two quick questions please:
(1) Since there is not yet any proprietary (members only) content, and since registration is not required, why did you take time to register? Was it just courtesy?
(2) Since I make no real attempt at SEO optimization, how did you hear about the site?
When you registered you were assigned the role of “subscriber” which doesn’t mean much. In order to confirm you registration you must respond to this personal email, including your real name in the reply. On receipt you will be moved to a “contributor” role which will allow you to leave comments and access proprietary content when/if it is posted. Some proprietary site content is planned for October this year, including all revisions to Big Daddy’s Toolboxes after that date. In addition, I might hit you up occasionally for opinions or even ideas to make the site better.
The fact that you have received this email means we found no record of spam or abuse in your online records – congrats on that.
If you think, that is too much hassle, don’t register.
Thanks,
John
